Can I bike the San Juan Islands without being an experienced biker?

Not so concerned about the exercise as I am about the traffic. I hear there are many cars on the same road as bikers. Is this intimidating? And if so, my other option is a car and there is like no where to park on the island. What would be your choice? Bike or car?
