JJ - In the early 1900's the 3 most common fatal diseases were tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, and diarrhea. Together, these 3 diseases caused about a third of all deaths. Death from TB was mainly a form of pneumonia and the favorite romantic-type cause of a woman's death in operas ("La Boheme" and others", and "Moulon Rouge" where it was more commonly called "consumption." Those years were long before there were any antibiotics to cure TB or bacterial pneumonias.
