Question about Mexico?

I'm going to Mexico for the first time this Summer in almost 4 years. I'm worried about the violence I've been hearing about lately. I'm going to San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco to visit my relatives. Anyone been there? How safe is it? I haven't been to Mexico in a while like I said, so i'm not sure on it's safety.
